Step One

The first thing you’ll want to do is pour some concrete mix into a mixing bowl. You will then want to add water. Start out with just a little bit, and continue adding small amounts until It is the right consistency. You’ll know it is right when it is almost the consistency of cookie dough. It should be easily moldable in your hands, but not fall apart as you hold it.

Step Two

Go ahead and cut your nylons into smaller pieces. Depending on how big you want your pumpkin is how you will determine how big to make each piece of nylon. Our pumpkins were 3-5 inches, and we cut about 6 inch pieces. You can use the toe as the bottom of some of your pumpkin. For the other pumpkins go ahead and tie one end in a knot and use that as the bottom.

Step Three

Next, you will want to fill the nylon with concrete. It might be helpful to have an extra set of hands. You will want to fill the nylon until it is as large as you would like your pumpkin. You can then shake it to get all the air bubbles out, this will help make sure you won’t have spots after the pumpkin sets.

Step Four

The last step is to tie twine string around the pumpkin. These are what make the indents around the pumpkin and, as you know, no two are alike so feel free to be creative with this step! For our smaller pumpkins, we used 8 pieces of twine. First, lay the twine on a table so the cross each other, and form a star. Then set the pumpkin in the center. Lastly, bring the matching ends up, and tie them on the top of the pumpkin. If you tie them too tight, the concrete can form around the string making it hard to remove once it hardens. If you want a deep indent, we suggest tying it tightly to get the indent and then gently loosen the twine while the concrete is still wet.

Step Five

Let the pumpkin dry as instructed on mix. You can then remove all twine string and nylon. For a stem, we tried adding concrete to the top. We mixed up a very little amount of concrete and sculpted it. We shaped the stem. We then scraped the stem with a fork to give it a little bit of a different texture from the pumpkin. That was not our favorite result so we also added cinnamon sticks as a stem also, just experimenting with what we thought would give it the best look. In the end, we decided just adding simple craft moss was the most effective for finishing it off and gave it the best look!

So there you have it! Super simple concrete pumpkins with an inexpensive concrete mix and some nylons!! We would love to see what you have been working on, so send us your concrete pumpkin photos on any of our social media platforms.
