Step One

Find an old board ~ any old board ~ something with paint or without. The piece of wood we used here was painted white and then left outside to weather naturally. You can white wash or stain a new board and sand it down to give it a weathered look OR add white paint to partially weathered wood like we did Here. If you don’t have any reclaimed lumber or distressed boards laying around, you can always check local thrift shops and garage sales for projects that you can repurpose.

Step Two

Gather some sticks. The sticks we used here were left over from our pumpkin projects but this is a great opportunity to get the kiddos or a good friend (or both!) and go for a walk! Bring a small bag along for gathering goodies along the way. Once all sticks have been gathered, you can cut them to approximate size with pruning shears or, if you want a more rustic look, just break the sticks to length instead. You will want to make sure to gather enough sticks, at least a few extra, so you have some to choose from once you start laying it out.

Step Three

Now, lay them on your board and cut them or break them to the final length. You will also want to cut a small stick for the stump/trunk of the tree. You can always make different size trees, or put multiple different sizes. After you get the sticks to length, hot glue them to the board.

Step Four

The next step is to tie the bow for the tree topper. It is just a very simple bow, just tie the ribbon like you would tie your shoe. Then cut the ends of the ribbon to give them a nice even and finished look. Hot glue the bow to the top of the tree and that’s it!

You now have yourself a cute, handmade stick tree sign to add to your decor. We would love to see your finished trees when you get them done! Please feel free to share photos with us on the social media below.
